Color in the Barrens

The oak barrens were named because their poor agricultural potential and widespread pin oak trees.  Through most of the year color is subtle or locally intense when wildflowers are in bloom. Color on the barrens is at peak now.  Recorded in Burnett Co., Wisconsin

Bluestem Diamond

Dew will soon turn to frost and this scene will be a pleasant memory.  Grass has been a frequent subject during the last couple months, only because I have noticed it this year.  I usually go out early and wander, hoping to see something that will look good.  Who knows what will catch my attention this fall?  Ah, the magic of nature photography!

Horsethief Butte

This is a view on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge.  As you head upstream the land opens up to prairie habitat.  Horsethief Butte is a climbing and rappelling center and crowded with enthusiasts on weekends.

Dog Creek Falls

One of the features the Columbia gorge is noted for are the many waterfalls.  Most of them are on the Oregon side of the river.  This is in the Washington and a very short walk from the car.  Most of the day it was busy but when everyone went home for supper I had it to myself.

If I were a hammer . . .

. . .all the world would be a nail.  To a macro photographer all the world is small.  I recently visited our daughter in Oregon and while waiting for her rappelling class to finish I explored the Columbia River Gorge. Since the light was so bright and flat macro was the only way to go.

Spier Motion

Sometimes video is the only way to share nature.  This spider was busy making its web one evening a couple months ago.  The movement and rhythm just cried out for a video capture.  This was made possible using the macro lens and using the video recording capability of the Canon 7D.  Filmed at Brown Co., MN.
