Prairie Afternoon

I went out to the prairie for the first time in a couple weeks looking for insects to film.It was a good afternoon for dragonflies and butterflies. This short piece gives you an idea of what the afternoon looked and sounded like.

Who me?

This meadow hawk seems guilty of something. My dream shot is a shot like this with a fly being eaten. Lots of macro shooting recently now that the flies and mosquitoes are past peak.

Could you please move?

This chance occurrence took place when I was scouting for a macro class at Eastman Nature Center in Maple Grove. I first discovered the frog and then noticed a meadow hawk dragonfly eating a deer fly. While photographing the meal it moved to the back of the frog creating this unique image.

Hanging On

September is my month to photograph dragonflies.  The dew covered wings glow when back lt by the rising sun making them easy to find. It's then a matter of getting the wings as sharp as possible while keeping the background from competing with the delicate wings.

Morning Dance

 I like the lines created by the grass and damselfly wings.  Recent mornings have been excellent mornings to photograph webs and dragonflies.  Photographed in Burnett Co., WI.

Looking at You

This is the time of the year I concentrate on dragonfly photography.  The heavy morning dew really accentuates their delicate features.  Not only that, they hold still.  The water drops magnifying the eye lenses made me look twice at this image. A couple of extension tubes would have been nice to get an even closer look.  Captured in Burnett Co., WI.
