Autumn Waves

 

We enjoyed the crashing waves and color while in Michigan a couple weeks ago. I couldn't resist putting a video together in what was otherwise a trip for landscape photography. This experience also tipped the balance to get an upgrade on the Sony RX10ii, more to come on that note.

Summer Water

Mound Creek Falls usually dries up during the summer leaving only a rock ledge but the recent heavy rains have created the opportunity for some waterfall shots. Exploring the stream as it flows into the lake highlights the brilliant orange lichen on the rocks. 

Calming Water

I've always been fascinated by images showing smooth water in bright light.  For me the milky water matches the calming sound of the water rushing over rocks.

Technical: The Sony RX10ii has a 3 stop ND filter built in and ISO down to 64 making images like this easy.

Autumn Bubbles

A quiet, peaceful stream can take the world's troubles away for a few minutes. Such is the beauty of nature.

December Thaw

I went to one of my favorite county parks last week. With no snow or color I recorded the slow moving water under the ice. The mood of the creek seems somber while it awaits a blanket of snow.

St. Croix River

The river has been running high all year and it still is much higher than normal for September. The numerous boat landings have interconnecting hiking trails to that make exploring the valley easy. This was taken at Norway Point which has a cedar bog boardwalk.

Technical:  In this case the polarizing filter almost darkens the water too much.

Exploring Water & Rock

Same waterfall, same day. I could (and have) spend an hour at a waterfall. Moving back, moving in, changing lenses, changing point of view, the list of possibilities goes on and on. Conversion to B &W to eliminate the browns in the rock and water.

September Waterfall

The spring run off is long past and summer rains a memory leaving the slow moving water of fall. This is a roaring stream in the spring and now you can walk across it with ease. The smooth water adds to the tranquility of the afternoon when it was recorded during a 5 second exposure.

Technical: polarizing filter and 2 stop ND filter used.

Lamar River Canyon

My recent posts have explored water during spring in Yellowstone National Park ranging from yesterday's calm sunrise to today's roaring canyon. The challenge is finding the shutter speed to interpret the character of the river. This was recorded at 1/250 second.

Smith's Rock State Park

This shot was taking after a great hike around one of the most popular sport climbing locations in Oregon. As one of afraid of heights I looked down more than up and took this shot. The larger rock is interpreted as heavier by the brain and anchors the image while the smaller stones lead me to the top of the image. Technical: Taken handheld with a Canon Elph. What is the difference between the two shots, a saturation or exposure adjustment? Answer: The larger shot is 1/2 stop darker which increases the color saturation of the water's color.
